Changing the future for girls and families in rural India — one life at a time.
Our story
In December 2008, we held our very first medical camp in the state of Haryana. The lack of medical attention there was eye-opening — this was one of the highest per-capita-income states in India, and yet basic care was missing.
At those camps we noticed something else: education for girls was being overlooked in most of the villages we visited. We came to see how closely the two were connected, and we decided to advocate for girls’ rights and education in the rural areas that needed it most.
Today, One Life At A Time is a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports a sister organization in India to educate girls and run medical camps. To date we’ve provided medical aid to more than 10,000 people and supported over 500 children in school.
How we work in India
We follow a proven “one teacher, one school” approach — a model that has brought learning to tens of thousands of rural and tribal villages across India.
Each school is led by a local teacher who knows the community and teaches in the children’s own language — through stories, songs and play.
No fancy building required. Classes happen wherever the village gathers — a courtyard, a porch, even under a tree — so learning reaches the children who need it most.
Our work is holistic: reading and arithmetic alongside health, hygiene and the annual medical camps that keep families well.
It’s a simple, proven and low-cost idea — and it means your support stretches a very long way.
Our mission
We focus on the two areas where we believe we can have the greatest impact: literacy and gender equality in education and healthcare. We work in collaboration with communities and local governments across India to build literacy and a habit of reading among primary-school children, and to support girls in completing secondary school with the life skills they’ll need to succeed.
Our vision
We envision a world in which all children can pursue a quality education, reach their full potential, and contribute to their community and the world. We believe healthy bodies and healthy minds go together — and that lifting up a girl lifts up an entire village.
What guides us
Lasting change happens with communities, not for them. We partner with residents, councils and local government so progress endures.
When girls are educated and healthy, families and whole villages thrive. We put girls’ education and wellbeing at the heart of our work.
Education and healthcare reinforce one another. We address both, because a child can’t learn well if she isn’t well.
